Book Review: A Mango-Shaped Space

Mia's family is wierd. Plain wierd. Her sister dyes her hair a different color each week, her brother keeps a chart of how many hamburgers he's eaten, and their parents think it's funny! Everyone thinks Mia wins the award for "Normalest Kid" in their family, including her best friend Jenna.
But Mia knows something no one else does. Sounds, numbers, and letters all have colors that go with them. Up until the third grade, she thought everyone saw the world the way she did, but she learns this isn't true in a very embarassing experience.
Eventually Mia realizes she does have to tell someone about her colors, and she does. Her parents go crazy. They don't know what to do. They bring her to tons of doctors, and after a long time, they find a doctor named Dr. Jerry Weiss, who finds out that her condition is called synesthesia (sin-ess-thee-ja).
There's a hallelujah chorus in Mia's mind, glad that she doesn't have something too wrong with her, but it's not as easy as it seems. Everyone bothers her at school, it's hard to tell Jenna, and then something happens that makes Mia find everything in her true self, and she finds out the power of family and friendship.
This is a really, really good book by Wendy Mass. It is such a good book that the first time I read it, I was really surprised that I hadn't read it before. If you haven't read this book, I hope you do, and I hope you enjoy it!!!!!!!!!
