Body Image Week

Hi Members!
This week is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW), and at New Moon Girls, we thought we’d talk about body image. Being unhappy with your body can make you feel bad about yourself. It can lower your self-esteem, and affect your confidence.
We don’t decide to dislike our bodies on our own; we learn to be our own hardest critic from others. In Picture Perfect, author Jessica Norling reveals the secrets behind flawless magazine models. Advertisers want us to think models are perfect, but they’re not! Sometimes, girls try to be as thin as the actresses and fashion models they see in magazines and on TV. As a teen, Jessica Weiner struggled with an eating disorder. She writes about how she learned to love her body in No More Secrets.
Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist, spends a lot of time with girls. She gives them advice on how to fight the effects the media has on their body image. She shares her tips with New Moon Girls in Worshipping the Gods of Thinness. It can be hard to fight back against our own negative voice that tells us we’re not pretty enough. Elizabeth Talbert fought against that voice by remembering how happy she was before she was self-conscious about her appearance. Read about her bravery in being herself in Hello, My Name is Inigo Montoya.
At New Moon Girls, we think it’s important to discuss body image. In a time when the media uses images of “perfection” to make girls feel insecure, we want you to know what really counts: You! You’re beautiful, creative, kind, unique, and wholly wonderful…just the way you are! So tell us why you love yourself, and why your body makes you feel powerful and beautiful. Submit your thoughts to the Spotlight Hub today!
Love,
Luna

Author Bio:
I'm the Spirit of New Moon! I LOVE hearing what girls have to say in New Moon Girls magazine and on NewMoonGirls.com. I'm excited about the launch of the website because it's a way for even MORE girls to share their voices! You can draw a picture of what you think I look like and submit it to New Moon Girls magazine. Every girl's idea is different, and that's how I like it! You can see one girl's idea of how I look in my avatar.
