Share YOUR Thoughts on Healthcare Reform!

You’ve probably heard about healthcare reform in the news, but it can be a lot to take in. Right now, Obama’s administration is pushing for a new healthcare plan for the U.S. that would offer a government insurance plan to people who don’t have coverage, and it would put some rules in place for private insurance companies—one of these rules is that private insurance companies could no longer discriminate based on gender.
Right now, many insurance companies won’t cover the costs of pregnancy and delivery for women. Insurance companies that do help with pregnancy costs often charge women more money—even if the woman doesn’t plan to have kids. In addition, about ten states won’t cover injuries to women that result from being in an abusive relationship.
Some insurance companies say it’s fair to charge women more because they use healthcare services more often, but they don’t yet have any statistics to back this claim up. On October 15, the Senate Health, Labor, Education, and Pensions Committee will be meeting to discuss women’s healthcare needs.
People who oppose Obama’s healthcare plan worry that it will cost too much, that it will give government too much control over healthcare, or that it will put private insurance companies out of business.
What do you think? Do you agree with Obama’s healthcare reform plan? Why or why not? Do you think it’s fair for insurance companies to charge women more for insurance? What do you think are the best ways to stop insurance companies from discriminating against women?
