The Silenced by James DeVita

Have you ever read a book that you can really relate to? A book that touches you? A book that makes you want to make a difference? For me, one of those books was The Silenced, by James DeVita.
The Silenced is about a teenage girl named Marena. She lives in a community where everything appears to be perfect, like a utopia. But her family was sent here because of her now deceased mother’s protest against the reigning political party. The political party killed her mother, and her father is under house arrest. Children and teens are not allowed to speak unless asked to. Basic rights are unheard of. It’s more like an anti-utopia, if anything.
Everyone is the same, opinions rarely voiced.
But then Marena starts to remember the past. She remembers when people were different. She realizes life doesn’t have to be this way, and she sets off on a captivating adventure. Inspired by her mother’s protesting, she decides to resist.
Though The Silenced is based on a true resistance group during the Holocaust, it also glimpses toward the future. The Silenced is a book that truly changes your perspectives on the past, the future, and, most chillingly, the present. I recommend it to anyone.
