Girls Want More!
Our Company
Helping Girls Reach Their Full Potential
In today's media age, girls are often confused and torn
between what they dream for themselves and what society expects of them. Bombarded by both "perfect girl" stereotypes and contrasting, often outrageous, sexualized media images, many girls
give over their voices and give up their dreams. Research shows girls need resistance strategies to combat these influences and stay connected to their true interests, abilities, and ambitions.
Our products are designed to help girls develop resistance strategies and develop their full potential through self-discovery, creativity, and community. More than fifteen years ago, our award-winning print publication, New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams, set a new standard for media aimed at tween and teen girls. Today, this preeminent publication continues under its new name, New Moon Girls, and is joined by New Moon Girls online. Through New Moon Girls online (for girls age 8 and up) and our coming online community, orb28 (for girls 13+), we continue to set the highest standards and raise the bar for girl-centered media in the new media age.
The appearance of New Moon magazine was a clarion call for parents and others who care about girls and recognize that, exposed at a young age to negative messages in our society and media, girls can have their self-esteem, body image, confidence, and dreams forever altered. Recognizing a new demand for higher-quality media, numerous publications, products, and resources entered the market, each with varying degrees of expertise and commitment to helping girls discover and be true to their unique selves. In recent years, with the identification of "tween" girls as a market force, a whole new media explosion has occured--much of it as undermining of girls' self-esteem and potential as what spurred the original publication of New Moon. In this crowded and confusing market place, New Moon Girl Media remains the market leader in products and communities that help girls reach their full potential and the only producer of girl-governed product lines. Girl Editorial and Girl Advisory Boards oversee the development and execution of everything we create, resulting in truly girl-centered media where every girl can discover her voice and bring it to the world.

OUR HISTORY
The Leader in Girl-Centered Media
In 1992, Nancy Gruver's eleven-year-old twin
daughters were about to enter adolescence. Nancy felt the anxiety many women experience remembering their own tween and teen years.
Unable to find practical, accessible resources for her daughters, Gruver and her husband, Joe Kelly, envisioned a magazine for all girls who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. They brought the concept to their daughters, Mavis and Nia, who "recruited" friends to join the first Girls Editorial Board. These twenty girls worked together to develop the departments, themes, and features for the publication that launched nine months later: the award-winning, ad-free New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams.
Over the years, New Moon's readership grew and its message of empowerment touched hundreds of thousands of girls, parents, and caring adults. But in 2006, Nancy and New Moon's adult staff took a hard look at how the Internet and new media was changing the publishing world. They decided new media and technology represents an unparalleled opportunity to reach more girls than ever before, and they embarked on a bold growth plan.
A year later, New Moon Publishing was reborn as New Moon Girl Media, and the development of new web communities was well underway. Today, girls age 8 and up enjoy their magazine under a new name, New Moon Girls, and find all new opportunities for self-discovery, creativity, and community at New Moon Girls online. Girls ages 13+ will soon have their own community in orb28, and parents, teachers, youth leaders, and other caring adults turn to New Moon Girl Media as an expert resource in helping girls build healthy resistance to gender stereotypes and inequities.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Share the Power
New Moon Girl Media operates on a philosophy we
call "Share the Power." It is a model of team interaction in which adult staff members and interns work with girl advisory and editorial boards and experts outside the organization to
fulfill our mission of bringing girls' voices to the world.
Share the Power means we, as a company, recognize the value and expertise of all participants and contributors, whether they be girls or adults, in New Moon. We recognize that no one is more expert at being a girl than girls themselves, and that from their expert point of view, girls bring invaluable ideas and perspectives to the editorial and decision-making process.
Our philosophy also means we recognize that, by partnering with adults with business and administrative expertise, girls can find the support and resources necessary to bring their vision to life. Through Share the Power, New Moon Girl Media creates a unique business model that we believe can change the world.
